I say engine. Since it is an internal combustion engine.

Gasoline/Alcohol/Diesel ENGINE .

Electric MOTOR .

That's how I think of it.

A motor can be electric, but only an engine can be combustion.

However, a steam engine is an external combustion engine...the combustion takes place outside of the cylinders.

Well, both. For the unwashed masses who are uninterested in cars, I use "engine". When speaking to fellow enthusiasts, I'll still use engine but sometimes I'll say motor.

If the engine is small, like under 1500cc, then I tend to call it a motor no matter what.

Engine. I think it's a continental difference. Pretty certain no-one uses 'motor' over here.

Interestingly, the word 'engine' existed before the invention of engines. Back then, it meant someone/something who was of great creative intelligence: 'that woman is of great engine'.

You can see how it came to be applied to these fandangled self-propelling contraptions.

Agree. As much as I like to think it should always be engine, once in a while I catch myself using motor, or find motor used. Things such as Motor cycle blur the line.

Some US railroads with electric locomotives called them 'motors'. Some called them 'engines'. And several railroads with diesel electric locomotives still call them...motors. Go figure :)

Yeah, pretty much my response the first time I saw it.

From the Youtube comments

"=manshon=mansion. A “mansion” is a Japanese ownership apartment building. At 0:26 you see a mansion behind the actors. A “surpass mansion” must be one that surpasses those of the competitors.

Mune fukuramu = expand breasts. Yume fukuramu = expand dreams. Testicle=kintama=gold ball. The ad is a word play with gold/wealth and dreams."

I do love Teh Interwebz...

Yeah, that's where it gets tricky 'cause they have Diesel engines driving an Electrical generator that powers an Electric motor. And then some have Turbine engines instead of a Diesel engine.

Motor is easier for mouth-breathers to grunt.

I call it a punchy explosion box in regular cylinder engines and magical triangle twister in a rotary.

That seems fairly accurate. Basically sums up my understanding of them as well.
